Missing Link Politics, A Doctor Assaulted, and Ashwini Bhide’s Reality Check: Maharashtra’s Week in Focus

The first week of July has reminded Maharashtra of one simple truth—nature doesn’t wait for anyone. Just a few weeks ago, everyone was complaining that the monsoon was delayed. Now, barely a week into July, people are praying for the rain to stop for a day or two. Heavy showers have battered several parts of the state, exposing both strengths and weaknesses in Maharashtra’s infrastructure.

While Mumbai largely escaped the worst flooding this time, areas like Vasai-Virar and Nalasopara once again found themselves submerged. The recurring scenes of waterlogging point to the same old problems—poor planning, inadequate infrastructure and delayed civic solutions.

But the rains also triggered a political storm.

The Missing Link Controversy: Facts vs Social Media

One of Maharashtra’s biggest infrastructure achievements—the Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link—came under intense criticism after a landslide disrupted traffic.

Here’s what actually happened.

The landslide did not occur inside the tunnel. It happened outside the tunnel, where rocks and debris fell onto the road during heavy rainfall. Authorities immediately stopped traffic as a precautionary measure. Within approximately 18 hours, the debris was cleared and vehicular movement resumed.

Yet social media exploded.

Without verifying facts, many declared the ₹7,000 crore project a failure. Allegations of corruption started circulating before official information was even available.

Sometimes misinformation travels faster than the bulldozers clearing the debris.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded strongly in the Maharashtra Assembly. His language surprised many because he is usually measured in his public speeches.

But his core message was clear: Criticise the government if you want—but don’t tarnish Maharashtra’s image without knowing the facts. That’s a distinction worth remembering. Disagreeing with political leadership is part of democracy. Discrediting a world-class infrastructure project based on incomplete information helps nobody.

Nature Doesn’t Read Tender Documents At the same time, the incident raises an important question.

Countries with extensive mountain highways often install rockfall protection nets around vulnerable slopes near tunnels. Should Maharashtra adopt similar safeguards for projects of this scale?

Absolutely.

Imagine if a moving vehicle had been directly hit by falling rocks. The consequences could have been catastrophic. Infrastructure isn’t judged only by how it’s built—but by how well it’s prepared for nature’s surprises.

A Doctor Assaulted for Doing His Job

At KDMC’s Shastri Nagar Hospital, a pregnant woman required a Neonatal ICU bed for her to be new-born. Unfortunately, the hospital had only one NICU bed available—and it was already occupied by another infant suffering from respiratory complications. The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) advised the family to shift immediately to another hospital where the required facility was available.

It was a medical decision. Not a political one. Instead of accepting the advice, a local Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre entered the hospital with supporters and assaulted the doctor. The entire incident was caught on camera. The doctor is shaken badly. Not because of workload. Not because of salary. Because he lost faith that the system would protect him.

When doctors start fearing politicians more than emergencies, the healthcare system itself becomes the patient. Corporation hospitals are already understaffed and overburdened. Doctors work long hours for modest salaries while handling enormous pressure. Physical assault cannot become part of the job description.

An Opportunity for Leadership

Shiv Sena leadership has condemned the incident and asked authorities to initiate legal action. That’s necessary. But it may not be enough. The party leadership should go a step further. Meet the doctor personally. Apologise. Assure him that violence against medical professionals will never be tolerated. And ensure exemplary punishment for those responsible.

Justice isn’t only about filing an FIR. Sometimes it begins with restoring someone’s dignity.

Ashwini Bhide Reminds Us What Public Service Looks Like

Amid all the political noise came a refreshing moment. BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide appeared on Raj Shamani’s podcast. The nearly three-hour conversation offered viewers something rarely seen—an honest explanation of how Mumbai’s civic machinery actually functions. Interestingly, much of the first hour focused on Mumbai Metro. Which isn’t surprising.

Anyone who has followed Ashwini Bhide’s career knows the Metro has been one of her biggest professional missions. You simply can’t separate the Metro from Ashwini Bhide.

You can move Ashwini Bhide to BMC, but you can’t take the Metro out of Ashwini Bhide. More importantly, she openly acknowledged shortcomings within the BMC.

She admitted that until now she had been dealing with issues at the macro level and intends to dive into micro-level governance—from manhole covers to tree audits to accountability within departments. That’s leadership. Owning problems instead of denying them. And early signs suggest she’s serious. Several engineers have already faced action over lapses during the monsoon. Her message is unmistakable: Performance matters.

The Politics of Optics

One smaller episode also became a talking point. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde was criticised on social media after videos showed her asking people to move away from Marine Drive while someone held an umbrella over her. Whether fair or unfair, politics today isn’t driven only by actions. It’s driven by optics. Every public appearance is recorded, shared and judged instantly. Sometimes perception becomes the bigger story.

The Bigger Picture

This week wasn’t just about rain.

It was about three different tests.

A test of infrastructure.

A test of political responsibility.

A test of governance.

The Missing Link showed how quickly misinformation can overshadow facts.

The KDMC hospital incident exposed the dangerous culture of political intimidation.

MC Ashwini Bhide’s interview reminded us that honest governance still has the power to inspire confidence.

Criticise governments. Question projects. Demand accountability. But verify facts before delivering the verdict. Because once misinformation becomes the headline, the truth spends the rest of the week trying to catch up.
