Rahul Narwekar’s Assembly Blunder, the Girish Mahajan Viral Photo, and Why Social Media Must Stop Rushing to Judgment
By Vikrant Joshi
Two completely different incidents dominated Maharashtra’s political discourse over the past few days.
The first was Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar unexpectedly fumbling while reading a condolence message for legendary singer Asha Bhosle. The second was the viral circulation of a misleading photograph involving Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan and a young woman, which led to needless speculation and character assassination.
While these incidents may appear unrelated, they have one thing in common—they remind us how quickly public opinion is formed and how unforgiving social media has become.
Rahul Narwekar’s Rare Moment of Discomfort
Rahul Narwekar occupies one of the most respected constitutional positions in Maharashtra as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Over the past four years, I have heard him speak countless times. Whether in Marathi, English, or Hindi, he has consistently been an articulate, confident and fluent speaker. That is why his repeated fumbling while reading the Assembly’s condolence message for the legendary Asha Bhosle came as such a surprise. It wasn’t just one mistake.
He stumbled several times while reading the prepared text, and within minutes, videos of the incident went viral across social media. Predictably, trolling followed. Personally, I found the entire episode unfortunate.
Knowing Rahul Narwekar’s speaking abilities, I find it difficult to believe that the problem was his command over the language. If anything, the prepared speech may have contained unnecessarily complicated wording that interrupted his natural rhythm. Sometimes the simplest words carry the deepest emotions.
Speak From the Heart
There are occasions when prepared speeches are necessary. But there are also moments—especially condolence references—when authenticity matters more than perfectly drafted language.
Had Rahul Narwekar spoken from his heart instead of reading a written script, I genuinely believe his tribute would have sounded more heartfelt and meaningful.
His natural style of speaking has always been one of his greatest strengths. This incident should not define him. Everyone makes mistakes. However, a brief acknowledgement on social media, accepting that it was an unfortunate moment, would probably have ended the discussion much sooner, which was done the next day.
After all, people are generally forgiving when leaders acknowledge genuine mistakes.
The Girish Mahajan Controversy
The second incident is far more serious. A photograph and video clip featuring Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan alongside a young woman began circulating widely on social media. Within hours, speculation started. Some claimed she was his daughter. Others alleged she was someone else entirely. Several edited images and misleading posts added further confusion. Eventually, the truth emerged.
The young woman is Dr. Juhi Pawar, the daughter of one of Girish Mahajan’s close friends, who passed away some years ago. She has long been considered a member of the Mahajan family. Their families have shared a close bond for many years, celebrating festivals and family occasions together. Yet that did not stop people from inventing stories.
A Story Few People Knew
What saddened me most is that very few people knew who Dr. Juhi Pawar really is. She serves as a Medical Health Officer with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
More importantly, she displayed extraordinary courage when her father suffered from severe liver disease. While still pursuing her medical education, she donated part of her liver in an attempt to save his life. Sadly, despite her sacrifice, her father could not be saved. Think about the courage required for such a decision. Most of us cannot even imagine making such a sacrifice at a young age. Yet this young doctor did exactly that without hesitation. She deserves respect—not public humiliation.
Character Assassination Has Real Consequences
This is where social media often crosses the line. Without verifying facts, people created narratives, edited images and questioned the character of two individuals who share what is widely understood to be a father-daughter-like relationship.
Such actions are not harmless.
They can permanently damage reputations.
Imagine the emotional impact on Dr. Juhi Pawar.
Imagine the distress caused to both families.
What if prospective marriage proposals for her are influenced by false information circulating online?
What if long-standing family relationships become strained because strangers decided to invent stories for entertainment?
These are real consequences.
Character assassination should never become a form of public entertainment.
Verify Before You Share
This incident highlights an important responsibility that every social media user carries. Before forwarding a photograph, sharing a post or believing a viral claim, ask yourself one simple question:
Has this been verified?
Today, photographs can be edited within minutes. Videos can be manipulated. Artificial intelligence makes it even easier to create misleading content. Sharing unverified information may seem harmless, but it can destroy someone’s reputation in a matter of hours.
Public Figures Deserve Fairness Too
Being a politician does not mean every rumour is true. Yes, public figures should face scrutiny. Yes, journalists should ask difficult questions. But there is a clear difference between accountability and character assassination. Political criticism should always be based on facts—not assumptions, rumours or manipulated images.
A Small Message for Rahul Narwekar
Finally, I would like to say this to Speaker Rahul Narwekar. Please don’t let one unfortunate moment define your public image. Those who have watched you over the years know your abilities as a speaker. The next time you are delivering a tribute to someone who has touched millions of lives, perhaps rely less on complicated written drafts and speak from your heart. Sometimes sincerity speaks louder than perfect words.
Final Thoughts
The two incidents discussed here may seem unrelated, but they teach us the same lesson. One reminds us that every public figure is human and capable of making mistakes. The other reminds us that social media can become dangerously irresponsible when facts are ignored. In today’s digital world, truth travels slowly, but rumours travel instantly. As journalists, content creators and responsible citizens, we owe it to society to verify first, judge later, and remember that behind every viral post is a real human being whose life may be affected forever.
