असाही एक वेगळा पत्रकार–केतन तिरोडकर

कोणत्याही परिणामाची तमा न बाळगता सत्य तेच लिहिणारे काही पत्रकार मला माहित आहेत. अश्या पत्रकाराना बरीच कुलंगडी माहित असल्यामुळे आपल्या राज्याकार्त्यानी त्यांना लांबच ठेवले. पण त्यामुळे या पत्रकारांना काहीच फरक पडला नाही. ते ज्याच्याशी पंगा घेतात, विरोधात लिहितात त्यांच्याकडून अथवा त्यांच्या बॉस कडून काय परिणाम होतील याची चिंता कधीच करत नाहीत. पण तुम्ही राजकीय वार्तांकण  आणि गुन्हेगारी वार्तांकण याची तुलना केली तर गुन्हेगारी वार्तांकण हे मला अधिक आव्हानात्मक वाटल आहे. दर दिवशी तुम्ही मंत्रालयात बसून राजकारणी, सरकारी अधिकार्यांची लफडी बाहेर काढली तर तुमचा खून होणार नाही! जास्तीत जास्त तुमच्यावर खटला दाखल केला जाइल. अगदीच फार फार तर नेत्यांच्या चाम्च्यांकडून तुम्हाला फोन वरून धमक्या येतील. माझ्या मतानुसार गुन्हेगारी वार्तांकण हे सर्वस्वी वेगळच आहे. जे पत्रकार सातत्याने ग्यन्स्टर, पोलिस, यांच्या विरोधा लिहितात त्यांना मी सलाम ठोकतो! अनेक वेळा त्यांना माहित असते कि जे आपण लिहितो, त्या मुले आपल्या जिवावर बेतू शकते. त्यात हि काही पत्रकार व्यक्तीक स्वार्थासाठी गुन्हेगारांच्या इतके जवळ जातात कि त्यांची त्यातून सुटका नसते. जे. डे, जीगना वोरा आठवतात ना? पण राजकीय वार्तांकनात तीच धडाडी दाखवणारे पत्रकार हि आहेत. भाऊ तोरसेकर, प्रवीण बर्दार्पुरकर, ज्ञानेश महाराव, प्रफुल  मारपकवार, हेमंत जोशी (माझे वडील), प्रवीण चुंचूवार, अतुल कुलकर्णी, यदु जोशी (माझे काका) संदीप आचार्य, किरण तारे, विवेक भावसार, धर्मेंद्र जोरे इत्यादी हे त्या पठडीतले पत्रकार! हे सर्व खर्या अर्थाने महाराष्ट्रातील लढवय्ये पत्रकार आहेत. कशाची हि अपेक्षा न बाळगता, निस्वार्थीपाने ते काम करत असतात. त्यांना लिहिताना, बोलताना मी ऐकले आहे. खरच जबरदस्त!! तसेच काहीसे माझे गुरु यजुर्वेदी राव व अनिल गलगली आहेत!

गुन्हेगारी वार्ताहराना भेटून, त्याच्याशी बोलून, त्याना जाणून घेण्याची जीग्न्यासा माझ्यात नेहमीच असते. त्यापैकी काहीजण खूपच मोठे आहेत. हुसेन झैदी हे त्यातले राजेच!! मी सचिन तेंडूलकरला ओळखतो पण त्याने मला ओळखले पाहिजे ना? पण झैदी साह्बे मला चांगलेच ओळखतात!! त्यांची Black Friday, Dongri to Dubai, Byculla to Bangkok, Headly & I, Mafia Queens of Mumbai अशी एकापेक्षा एक मुंबईतील गुन्हेगारी विश्व उलघडवून मादाणारी पुस्तके लिहिली. झैदी साहेबांनी बहुतेक सर्वच इंग्लिश मिडीया, पब्लिकेशन हौसेस मध्ये कामे केली आहेत. आपल्या हे महत्वपूर्ण योगदानाबद्दल झैदी साहेब शुक्रिया!!

गेल्या आठवड्यात केतन तिरोडकर यांना भेटण्याचा योग आला. तिरोडकर म्हणजे फायर ब्र्यांड! पत्रकार, कार्यकर्ता आणि लढवय्या असा अफलातून माणूस! आता ते माझे मित्र झाले आहेत. मला माहित आहे कि तुमच्या पैकी अनेकजण केतन तिरोडकर ओळखत असणार. त्यांची पार्श्वभूमी मला माहित आहे (विकिपिडीया जरूर वाचा). पण कसे माहित नाही जेव्हा प्रथम या सद्गृहास्ताना भेटलो, तेव्हा मी एकदमच भारावून गेलो. टाईम्स ऑफ इंडिया मध्ये पत्राकारीचे धडे घेतलेले तिरोडकर “आफ्टरनून” साठी अनेक वर्ष गुन्हेगारी वार्तांकन करत होते. पन्नाशीला झुकलेले तिरोडकर साहेब पहिल्याच भेटीत मला त्यांनी मंत्रमुग्ध केले. मुंबई च्या गुन्हेगारी विश्वावर अनेक वर्षे सातात्याने लिखाण करणार्या केतनजीना वार्तांकण करताना एकाचीच बाजू लावून धरणे मान्य नाही. ते म्हणतात ” ज्या दिवशी पत्रकार केवळ एकाचीच बाजू, पक्ष घेतील, त्या दिवशी ती किवा तो अडचणीत येईल. प्रत्येक स्टोरी बाबत तरुण पत्रकाराने निपक्षपाती असायला हवे. त्या सोबत थोडीशी समय-सूचकता आणि निश्चित तर्कही हवाच! एखाद्याची बाजू घेण्याचे ठरवल्यावर त्याचे वाईट परिणाम भोगणार्या अनेक पत्रकारांची त्यांनी उदाहरणे दिलीत! सर्व काही माहित असणे आणि वस्तू निष्ठ वार्तांकण करणे या मध्ये गुन्हेगारी वार्तांकानाबाबत एक अस्पस्ट रेघ असते, तुम्ही गुन्हेगारी वार्ताहार असल्या मुळे नेहमीच सतर्क राहावे लागते. कारण तुम्ही कोणाला भेटत आहात, कोणाशी बोलत आहात, तुमचा सूत्र कोण आहे यावर बारकाईने लक्ष ठेवले जात असते. मी हे सर्व अनुभवले आहे. एका स्टोरी वर काम करताना माझ्यावर हल्ला हि झाला आहे. पण मी मागे सरलो नाही. मी प्मुंबाई पोलिस दलातील सुमारे ९०% कर्मचारी, अधिकार्यांना व्यक्तीशा ओलाखायचो. त्यांच्या साबोत माझे मित्रत्वाचे संबंध असायचे, पण त्या पैकी कोणाच्याही विरोधात माझ्याकडे जर स्टोरी असली तरी माझे संबंध त्या आड यायचे नाहीत. मी बिनधास्त ती छापायचो. प्रसंगी न्यायलातहि आव्हान द्यायचो.”

कै. विजय साळसकर  हे केतन तिरोडकर यांचे जवळचे मित्र. आजही केतनजी आपल्या दैनंदिन जीवनातील अनेक प्रसंगात असलॆले अंडरवल्ड चे संबंध उघडकीस आणत असतात. ते फेसबुक वर हुम्खास स्वतः बसतात. तेथे तिरोडकर जि माहिती लिहितात त्यात ऑफ द रेकॉर्ड माहिती वाचू शकणारे यांना खूप घबाड मिळू शकते. प्रत्येक गुन्हेगारी वार्ताहराने आणि ज्यांना या विषयात रस आहे, त्यांनी त्याची ती माहिती वाचली पाहिजे.

I know a very few journalist’s who dare to bare all through their writings, without fear! There are times when these journos are kept at bay just because they know more than they need to by our rajyakartas! But these journos don’t get bothered by that…they just write and write without fearing any consequences either from their bosses are on whom they have unleashed their mettle. But If you compare Political Beat to the one’s doing Crime beat, my heart will skip that one extra beat for the later ones. You don’t get killed man if your sitting at Mantralaya everyday. Maximum you can have a case on you, or at the most you will have listen to chamchas of the neta you have exposed on the phone! In my views, Crime Reporting is altogether a different ball game. Hats off to these hero’s. Here continuously they deal with gangsters, police and not only they report, but many times they happen to rub them the wrong way by filing the “correct” stories. Remember J.Dey and Jigna Vora? But taking nothing away from my political beat colleagues and their courage at the same time. Read Bhau Torsekar, Praveen Bardapurkar, Dnyanesh Maharao, Prafulla Marpakwar, Hemant Joshi (my father) Pramod Chunchuwar, Atul Kulkarni, Yadu Joshi (my uncle), Sandeep Acharya, Kiran Tare, Vivek Bhavsar to know what I mean. These are my Maharashtra’s warriors, in actual sense, working selflessly without any expectations. I have seen them talking and writing! Wow…just Wow!! Same goes my mentors cum Activists Shri Yajurvedi Roa and Anil Galgali. 

Anyways, I always had that curiosity to meet and know a lot of Crime Reporters. I know the legend though —Hussein Zaidi….I know who is Sachin Tendulkar,  the whole world knows him,  but he should know me nah? Here Zaidi saab knows me, yes the same legend who has given us Black Friday, Dongri to Dubai, Byculla to Bangkok, Headly & I, Mafia Queens of Mumbai, and along with that he has worked with I guess all the leading publications in the English Media. Zaidi saab, shukriyaan for your such long contribution! 

Last week I added one more feather to my cap -the effervescent Ketan Tirodkar! A Journo, an Activist and a fighter, is now a friend!! 

I know not a lot of you must be amazed by the name I said, given his humble background (read wikipedia) but don’t know why, when I met him for the first time I was in complete awe with this gentleman! A Times of India product went to cover Crime for “Afternoon” for a good amount of years. Nearing his 50’s Tirodkar saab was more than warm to me in our first meet. Having interviewed the whose of who of our Mumbai Crime Scene, Tirodkar ji is of the firm believer of not fixing camps when your report. He says “the day any journalist takes camp, or sides, he or she is in trouble”. He wants the younger lot of journos like us to be fair in our approach for any story. More than fair it needs to have a bit of common sense and a  definite logic attached. He did cite a lot of examples of journos who have met with dire consequences when they decided to take sides”… In crime reporting, it’s a very thin line between knowing all and reporting about such facts. You have to be extra vigilant as even being a journo you are continuously monitored whom you meet, whom you talk to, who is your source etc… I have seen all. I have been attacked once for a story when I tried to take it to a logical end, but that didn’t  deter me. I have the privilege to know almost 90% of the Mumbai Police given my reporting experience and perfect analysis, but if I have a story against them, I will not hesitate to challenge these guys in the courts, as well.” Calling Late Vijay Salaskar as one of  his closest friends, Ketanji is on a march to expose a lot of underworld links to our everyday life even today.
