Beyond Politics: Why the Fuss Over Mishka Kamboj’s 16th Birthday Party?

It was a simple 16th birthday celebration for businessman Mohit Kamboj’s daughter, Mishka. Yet, instead of letting the family enjoy the occasion, certain political circles and social media users are busy spreading anger and backroom gossip about the guest list.

Many need to understand that Mohit Kamboj is no longer the man who once stood on the streets taking bullets for his party and leaders. He has now emerged as a highly successful businessman who has forged strong partnerships with some of India’s top corporations and continues to expand his businesses both horizontally and vertically.

So what if Raj Thackeray, Aaditya Thackeray, Supriya Sule, Dhiraj Deshmukh, Shrikant Shinde, or Parth Pawar attended the party? Maximum builders and top corporates of the city were also present.

Does spending a few minutes at a birthday celebration mean they have abandoned their political beliefs or agendas? Has Raj distanced himself from Hindutva and the Marathi cause? Has Aaditya abandoned his Shiv Sainiks? This is pure nonsense.

This is Maharashtra, not a banana republic. No one here is a sworn enemy forever. Interpersonal relationships often matter more than public rivalries. If you think one birthday party can topple governments or rewrite political equations, you’re watching too many films.

Hypocrisy is easy to spot. Many Thackeray supporters have Gujarati or “Bhaiyya” friends, just as many BJP workers have Muslim friends. Don’t pretend otherwise just because you weren’t invited or your favourite leader’s presence didn’t fit your narrative.

Real politics runs deeper than what we see on social media. What we witness is barely 10% of the picture; the remaining 90% happens behind closed doors. Relationships transcend party lines — whether it’s Mohit being among the first to reach Lilavati Hospital after Baba Siddique’s murder, Amit Shah attending Ajit Pawar’s funeral, or Uddhav Thackeray’s government helping Covid patients without checking their political affiliation.

People mature. Alliances and equations evolve. Even if opposition leaders attended the party, it doesn’t give Mohit any free pass. If he errs, they will still criticise him — just as the BJP government will act if needed.

As for the guest list: none of the bureaucrats of Maharashtra were invited . The resentment from some bureaucrats is laughable. When they host their own Ganpati or weddings, they happily accept sponsorships from “friends” while ignoring relatives. Yet they complain about not being invited to someone else’s private party?

Complaints that Mohit invited people based on “bank balance” are equally petty. Had he not built genuine relationships, the Ambanis would not have attended with their family. Anant Ambani coming with his wife Radhika speaks volumes about the warmth between the families. So did the presence of Pranav Adani and Sajjan Jindal.

Mohit has long enjoyed friendships with stars like Sanjay Dutt, Shah Rukh Khan, Ranveer Singh, and AP Dhillon.

And let’s be clear: he was never a “new rich kid.” He comes from a wealthy business family in Varanasi and declared assets worth hundreds of crores even during his first election.

So, let the Kamboj family celebrate in peace. There is no need to create unnecessary drama over a young girl’s birthday.

Since I wasn’t invited either, let me take this opportunity to wish Mishka a very Happy 16th Birthday. God bless her!
